UPDATE: JANUARY 26th SPRING TRAINING

An interview with various players and the manager of the Doosan Bears camp was released on January 25th via YTN.

[Anchor]: “After two consecutive years of fall baseball, both of which ended in first-round losses, Doosan is determined to rebuild its “franchise” this year. It’s all about who fills the two vacant infield spots, and it’s going to be a never-ending race to the land of opportunity for younger players. Yang Si Chang is the reporter.”

[Reporter]: “The retirement of veteran shortstop Kim Jae Ho and the departure of third baseman Hur Kyoung Min. Despite the loss of two of Doosan’s most dominant infielders, the team prepared for the new season without any outside signings. The plan is to move Kang Seung Ho from second base to third base, and to introduce a new combination of young players at shortstop and second base.”

[Lee Seung Yuop/ Doosan Manager]: “There are players who have invested a lot of time to get this opportunity, so I will give them a chance, and all evaluations will be made after camp and before the start.”

The atmosphere on the roster is already heating up as Lee Seung Yuop promises endless competition. Lee Yu Chan, who is the first candidate for the keystone combination of shortstop and second base, is determined to shed the “backup” label and earn a “starter’s” spot.

[Lee Yu Chan / Doosan Infielder]: “I feel like the only way to earn that spot is to try and do well.”

Yeo Tong Keon, who made his first appearance in the first team last season, is also looking to make a splash with his characteristic ambition.

[Yeo Tong Keon / Doosan Infielder]: “I’m still lacking a lot, but there’s nothing to be afraid of, nothing to lose confidence in, I’ll just have to hit, and I’m thinking positive thoughts.”

In addition, established infield prospects like Park Jun Young and Oh Myeong Jin are also in contention, as is Park Jun Sun, who inherited Kim Jae Ho’s number after being drafted in the first round last season.

[Yang Eui Ji / Doosan Catcher]: “I think the seniors should work hard to help the Doosan Bears get a national keystone.”

As Doosan looks to rebuild its reputation beyond last season’s fourth-place finish, fans are eager to see what kind of infield combination the Bears will bring to the table, and cheer for the younger players to compete.

This is YTN’s Yang Si Chang.

Kim Min Seok seems to be settling in with the Doosan Bears seamlessly since being traded from the Lotte Giants. He was all smiles dressed in his Sunday’s best at the airport to go to Australia for spring training.

A lil bit about Kim Min Seok~

Kim Min Seok is a 2004, Seoul native and prior to the 2025 season, has lived in Busan since 2023. He was drafted third overall pick, first round right out of high school to the Giants. He’s returning to his hometown this season due to a two-three trade between the Bears and the Giants. He’s a fan favorite, appearing in 129 games in 2023 (rookie year). He had a bit of a set back in 2024 batting 2-1 in 41 games.

The article mentions a bit about Doosan’s Kim Taek Yeon~

Kim Taek Yeon is in his second professional year and in year two of attending the first team Spring training camp. He’s not alone this year as Yeo Dong Keon, Im Dong Sung, Park Jong Ho, Jeon Da Min, Kim Mu Bin and Ryu Hyun Jun are also travelling to Sydney with him. He’s not the baby anymore as two rookie pitchers, Park Jun Sun and Hong Min Kyu, are travelling this year.

Comments from Kim Min Seok:

Kim Min Seok: “When I lived in Busan, I has to order food when I was hungry, but now that I’m back home, it’s easier because I don’t have to order food. I can focus more on my workouts because my parents take care of me.”

“I focused on my physical fitness and weight training, and I also paid a lot of attention to my diet. My goal is to become an injury-free player who can help the team win the championship.”

Before departure to Australia, reporters at Incheon airport were able to snag Gwak Bin to the side and ask some questions.

A lil bit about Gwak Bin and his 2024 season~

Gwak Bin (the seoul native right-handed ace) was a lil lonely and strugglin last season when both foreign pitcher, Raul Alcantara and Brandon Waddle were released and benched (respectively) due to injuries. To add to the pressure, fellow starters Choi Seung Yong and Choi Jun Ho were benched due to injuries as well. He pitched nonstop in 2024 all the way until he was called up to participate in WBSC Premier 12. 2025 though is lookin up as he shouldn’t be lonely. 2024, Gwak Bin had 30 games 15-9 .424 ERA 154 strikeouts 76 walks 1.30 WHIP and 17 quality starts. He cemented himself as a homegrown ace with another year of double-digit wins. This season Gwak Bin will be joined with his fellow pitchers and new foreign pitchers, left-handers Cole Irvin and Zach Logue.

His goal for this season is to re-establish himself. To work out the ups and downs with advice from colleagues and friends (like junior Lee Eui Lee of the Kia Tigers).

Comments from Gwak Bin: “I had a very grateful time last year, but honestly, it was lonely and hard. Last year, when the foreign pitchers were out and I was alone, it was too hard to think I shouldn’t be the only one to fall apart. At the end of the day, I regretted that if my teammates had done well together, our team would have gone higher. I think I’ll be less lonely this year than last year.”

“I had a short time to work out in the off season because I went to the training center, but I prepared hard. Now, I’m going to forget about last year’s results and start spring training with the idea of not getting injured.”

“It’s all about the pitches. Coach Kim Ji Yong told me last year, ‘If you give up three walks in a game, you’ve lost your chance to get three outs, and you’re only throwing five innings when you should be throwing six’ and it resonated with me. I’m always confident in the first inning when the pitcher has the advantage, but the ball isn’t going my way. I’m not giving up walks because I’m scared, but because I want to throw it in the zone and it’s not going in.”

“In our team, my partner is Choi Won Joon. He learned a lot when he went to the U.S. training center this time. We’re going to talk more when we go to Australia. With Lee Eui Lee, we talk about baseball on video for over an hour. We have similar pitching styles, which is a bit off-balance, so we get along well (laughs). He studies baseball a lot too. Even though he’s a junior, there’s a lot to learn from him.”

“I don’t have any goals for this year in terms of multiple wins. If I play a full-time season without skipping the starting rotation, other good results will follow.”

“Of course, I want to finish the 2025 season well and compete in the WBC next year. I was very disappointed with the bad result in the WBC two years ago, but I hope that this time I will give my best effort and create a result that will raise the popularity of Korean baseball again.”

Kang Seung Ho was snagged by the reporters as he left for Australia on the 24th with the main Doosan camp. He is making the transition from shortstop to third basemen and was asked general questions about the transition and ended it by reassuring fans.

Doosan has been causing quite the frenzy in media as it’s doing a complete infield overhaul. Kim Jae Ho (shortstop) has officially retired and Hur Kyoung Min (third basemen) has transferred to KT Wiz. Doosan has used this to push Kang Seung Ho to his full potential with moving him from second base to third base. According to the article there are seven players competing for second base and shortstop: Park Jun Young, Lee Yu Chan, Park Gye Beom, Oh Myeong Jin, Yeo Tong Keon, Park Ji Hoon and Park Jun Sun.

A lil bit about Kang Seung Ho~

Kang Seung Ho is the Bears second baseman (though he can play shortstop) and vice captain. He has experience with third base so the club is expecting this transition for him to smooth. Though he is not satisfied with his career high in 2024, he’s optimistic and looking forward to the 2025 season and his new position on the field. He’s also expected to be a dad of twins in the summer so congratulations to his wife and him.

Comments from Kang Seung Ho: “The manager asked me if I was okay at third base. I confidently said ‘It’s fine. I can do it.’”

“I think the answer will come out a little easier because I was confident that I could do it, and it’s also the direction the club wants. As a player, you have to follow the directions of the club.”

“I also looked up videos of Hur Kyoung Min playing third base. I also did a lot of image training. What you think in your head and what you do with your body are very different. So I plan to practice a lot in Australia.”

“I’m going to make sure that I’m in a good position at third base so that the coach doesn’t have a headache and doesn’t have to struggle with the lineup.”

“There are many player who are good at third base. I don’t think it will be a negative factor for me. If I keep doing what I’m doing, I think I’ll have good results.”

“I heard the due date is July 27th, but the twins could come earlier so it could be the end of June. Now I have to get better at baseball. After all, cost a lot of money now that they are twins. So I will do better and earn a lot of money.”

”My coach told me I can do better. I will try to do better with that mindset. There are more and more young players every year. I will lead by example and prepare well for the season so that we can play baseball in an energetic and bright atmosphere.”

UPDATE: JANUARY 30th

Sorry for being gone y’all :( a lot was happening so had to take a short break but we are back!!

A lil bit about our three new foreign players~

Cole Irvin is a 6’3”, left handed pitcher that was drafted in 2016 to the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 2019 with 134 career games (93 starts) 28-40 4.54 ERA in 593 innings. In 2024, he went between the Baltimore Orioles and the Minnesota Twins 6-6 5.11 ERA in 111 innings 29 games (16 starts).

Zach Logue is a 6’4”, left handed pitcher that was drafted in 2017 to the Toronto Blue Jays. Between 2017 and 2022, he went to the Athletics (Oakland) where he made his Major League debut in 2022, 19 games (10 starts) 3-8 7.20 ERA in 70 innings. (Triple-A, 2024) 24 games (13 starts) 2.69 ERA 75 strikeouts 93⅔ innings. (Triple-A, career) 21-25 5.07 ERA 87 games (68 starts) 355.1 innings on hold and on save.

Jake Cave is a 6’2” left handed hitter drafted in 2011 to the New York Yankees. Between his draft an 2018 he made his Major League debut in Minnesota (Minnesota Twins) with an .236 AVG .692 OPS 45 home runs 176 RBI’s in 523 career games. In 2024, he played for the Colorado Rockies .251 AVG 7 home runs in 123 MLB games. (Triple-A) .303 AVG .893 OPS 64 home runs 256 RBI’s in 427 games.

According to media reports, Cave is expected to be a key asset to the Bears batting lineup with Irvin and Logue to be a duo to provide some breathing room and a one two punch for the pitching lineup.

The Bears celebrated the Lunar New Year in Australia and we also go to know more about our three new foreign players in the time I took a small break from updating about Spring Training.

To provide more context, (and updates) as stated in the article the Korean starting rotation includes: Gwak Bin, Choi Seung Yong, Choi Jun Ho, Choi Won Joon and Kim Yu Seong with mounting expectations growing for Kim Taek Yeon (who won Rookie of the Year). The Bears have a mountain of changes to the bullpen with a number of players competing for second base and shortstop as usual second base player, Kang Seung Ho, makes the move to third base man this season. Park Jun Young, Lee Yu Chan, Park Gye Beom, Yeo Tong Keon, Im Jong Sung, Oh Myeong Jin and Park Jun Sun are all locked in on having that position. Yang Seok Hwan will be the second Korean baseball player to hit 30 home runs back to back, next to teammate Kim Jae Hwan. Speaking of Kim Jae Hwan, he’s back, better and solid with plenty of drive. This will also be his last year of FA. Captain and Catcher Yang Eui Ji is still the best hitter in the KBO, though had an unfortunate injury in 2024.

You also have Kim Dae Han (.184 AVG), who went to the United States for training in the off season, has fan and media on the edge to see if he will finally achieve his full potential this season.

The Bears will be training in Sydney, Australia until February 16th, afterwards they’ll continue training in Miyazaki, Japan until March 3rd.

Comments:

Doosan Official: “For lunch, we prepared holiday specialties such as tteokguk, braised short ribs, jeon, japchae and namul. Thanks to the preparations by a local catering company, the players were able to get into the holiday spirit for a while during training.”

Yang Eui Ji: “The food was as good as what we eat in Korea. It’s sad to be away from my family but, I think I and the younger guys will be able to get into the holiday spirit and gain strength.”

Jake Cave: “I heard that when you eat tteokguk on the New Year, you gain another year. I wanted to spit out the rice cake soup (tteokguk) when I heard I was getting older but, it was delicious so I ate it.”

Doosan Official: “New foreign players Cole Irvin, Zach Logue and Jake Cave arrived in Australia on the 25th. They were on the field on the 26th, a voluntary workout day, and focused on conditioning with light workouts.”

Cole Irvin: “I’m excited to hit the ground running with my teammates and coaching staff in spring training. I think the new logo and uniform design is sleek. The details are outstanding (laughs). I have high goals and expectations for myself. I’ve prepared well in the off season by focusing on improving my weakness and building on my strengths. So I’m determined to be the best version of myself this season.”

Zach Logue: “I’ve been waiting for this moment all off season. It’s just getting started but, it feels good already. My goal is to be consistent and dependable. I want the coaching staff, my teammates, and the fans to know that when Logue is on the mound, we’re going to have a chance to win. I’m here to compete for the fans and win for them.”

Jake Cave: “The Doosan Bears have the best equipment and supplies I’ve ever received (laughs). I’m excited for this new opportunity. I’m just going to do my best for the Doosan Bears. If the fans have high expectations, that’s positive in itself. I have high expectations for myself as well. I will show the fans how passionate I am about the game.”

A shorter article from the Doosan camp. Rookie Hong Min Kyu is off to a solid start according to Doosan and articles from the media. Manager Lee Seung Yuop seems to have given his approval of the the rookies first bullpen.

A lil bit about Hong Min Kyu~

Hong Min Kyu is a pitcher that was drafted right out of high school in the 2025 KBO Draft. He attended the rookie training camp along with his fellow rookies, then was invited to the Icheon Final Camp and is now the only rookie pitcher in the Australian Spring Training Camp. In his first bullpen, according to the article, he threw 40 pitches and practiced his fastball, curve ball, slider and changeup. Dubbed as “a pitcher with a stable mechanism and pitching motion with both fastballs and changeup. He has the potential to improve his skills if he strengthens his physical condition.” from a Doosan scout with equally favorable reviews from other coaches and staff.

Comments:

Lee Seung Yuop: “As a rookie, it must have been nerve-wrecking to make his first bullpen pitch in front of the coaches and seniors but, he pitched better than I expected. I hope he can continue his confident pitching throughout the camp without pushing himself too hard.”

Park Jung Bae: “He pitched well in his first bullpen outing. It’s interesting to see. He joined spring training because he threw well in the final camp and he threw well this time too.”

Hong Min Kyu: “Both my fastball and changeup went where I wanted them to, so it was more than I expected. (Catcher) Ryu Hyun Jun, who caught the ball, kept my energy up in the middle, so it was fun to throw.”

“Kim Taek Yeon has been taking good care of me since I left the country, telling me everything. My brothers helped me relax and adapt. My goal is to focus on what’s in front of me and go to the Miyazaki camp without injures.”

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 1st

This is the cutest thing~ Doosan celebrated Cole Irvin’s birthday the other day in Australia (I know they become close knit and do this, I just find this cute).

A lil bit more about Cole Irvin~

Cole Irvin is a left handed pitcher from the United States and is a pretty tall gentle giant at 193 centimeters (roughly 6‘3“). Born on January 31st, which is happened whilst spring training, the team wanted to throw him a surprise birthday. Something small, searching high and low to find a birthday cake as the area they train in doesn’t have a lot of bakeries.

Later into their meal time, Yang Eui Ji brought the cake over as everyone sang Happy Birthday with Yang smearin a little icing on Irvins face (lovingly).

The article stats that Irvin found the gesture extra heartwarming and special. Though this is commonplace in sports, he‘s never gotten to celebrate his birthday with his teammates. MLB spring training takes place after January usually around mid-February.

According to the article, Irvin’s signing to Doosan was a surprise considering his major league stats and that he was active in the major league for 2024. 6-6 with a 5.11 ERA in 29 appearances (111 innings - 16 starts).

Drafted in 2016 to the Philadelphia Phillies, he made his MLB debut in 2019. Throughout his career he‘s been signed to the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Minnesota Twins with overall stats 28-40 record with two saves and a 4.54 ERA in 134 games (593 innings) in the Major League.

Comments:

Cole Irvin: ”I never expected my teammates to organize a party like this. I’m embarrassed and touched because I don‘t usually celebrate birthdays.“

"My birthday (in the U.S.) was before spring training started, so I'm used to always being taken care of, but I'm really grateful to all my teammates. Thanks to them, I will remember this day happily."

Hong Geon Hui: "Irvin just joined the team, so it's still going to be a little strange for him. It feels good to be able to celebrate Cole's birthday with the teammates."

"I hope Cole felt the close-knit culture of the Doosan Bears after today (laughs). As a teammate, I hope he will adapt well and lead the Doosan Bears mound with good results without any injuries."

Things may be looking up for Kim Dae Han this season!! His teammate, Kim Jae Hwan is pretty sure in his growth and hope of a resurgence.

Kim Dae Han (left) and Kim Jae Hwan (right)

A lil about Kim Dae Han~

Kim Dae Han is a 24 year old outfielder for the Doosan Bears. Touted as the next Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers) in high school, he was drafted in 2019 as Doosan’s first round pick. After sustaining a fracture in his right metacarpal bones as he slid into third base during a exhibition game in March of 2023; Kim Dae Han went through two months of rehabilitation. Once he returned he went 1 for 9 with 8 doubles, one home run, 7 RBIs and .566 OPS in 33 games with having to return home early from the Miyazaki Education League early after the season. In 2024, he batted 1-3 with one home run, 7 RBIs in 61 games toggling between the first and second teams. He participated in both the Phoenix Education League (Miyazaki, Japan) and Icheon Final Camp (Icheon, South Korea) to analyze his weakness from 2024 and where he needs to improve for 2025. Afterwards in the off-season, he traveled to the United States (on his own dime) and trained at Kang Jeong Ho’s ‘King Kang School’.

A lil bit about Kim Jae Hwan~

Kim Jae Hwan is a Doosan Bears outfielder who’s in his third year of his FA contract. Though it was a bit of ebbs and flows after his FA contract signing (four years, 11.5 billion won (roughly over 7 million USD). His stats from 2024 include: .525 AVG with 29 home runs, 92 RBIs, 78 runs scored and a .893 OPS. He ranks 8th in home runs and slugging percentage and 10th in OPS. Having the rush of the 2024 season, he attended Icheon Final Camp; receiving one on one instructions from Lee Seung Yuop (Doosan’s manager and known as the National Hitter). Mans was not satisfied with 29 home runs that he went back for the second year in a row to Kang Jeong Ho’s (former majored leaguer) Training School in the off season before the Spring Training in Australia.

(the article 2023: he spiked in doubles (15 to 28), home runs (10 to 29) and an on base percentage (.331 to .525).

a little nugget from the article: Son Ah Seop (NC Dinos) also attended the Kang Jeong Ho’s school and became a batting champion in 2023.

Comments:

Kim Jae Hwan: "Personally, I've always thought that (Kim) Dae Han has abilities that no one else in Doosan has, with a little more time and a little more knowledge of what he needs to do, I expect him to do very well."

"(Asked about what advice he had from the U.S.) When you're learning something new, there comes a point where you're like, 'No, no, no.' It's one thing to hit it today, it's another thing to hit it tomorrow. I told him that you can do it too, and not to think too quickly."

Kim Dae Han: "I had a lot of conversations with (Kim) Jae Hwan. I asked him a lot about what he liked and what I could learn from him. He gave me a lot of details about the accommodation."

"I hope I can prepare hard for the new changes and have a better season than before without any injuries. I know the fans have been disappointed, but I hope they can support us one more time."
